Chapter 11

There was no room for holding prisoners at their house so they trooped their way toward the apartments. It was a long, arduous process. They had to be careful to not be discovered, which also meant someone playing distraction to any passing pedestrians and their captives made it as difficult as possible, picking the most inopportune moments to try their hands at escape. Unsuccessful but tiring.

When they finally arrived, Dean was annoyed and covered in sweat. Her burden had recovered enough to make a nuisance of itself. She had to break the jaguar’s paws as it tried to rake the skin off her back, one of her wolves clamping its jaw shut to smother its yowls. That had kept it behaved but life came back to it as they entered the lobby. Most likely thinking this was the best time its attempts would be noticed.

Dean tossed the creature across the lobby with a scoff, its claws scratching the linoleum floor as it slid to the front desk. “Quit it right now if you want any hope of getting out of this alive. This is our place. Yowl and scratch all you want but it won’t do any good.” She tilted her head back and let out a barking noise. Several wolves appeared on the stairwell. “See that? Behave or they won’t just be chasing you up a tree.”

The jaguar glared at all of them but ceased its threatening behavior. Its companion was of no trouble, held tightly by two wolves, and had wisely chosen to hold his silence though Dean knew she would be less grateful for his quiet manner when the questioning started. “Take ‘em down to the basement and keep an eye on them. Take shifts. I want eyes on them every second and at least six of you guarding the door.”

“Six?” one of the wolves questioned.

“Have you seen a bruin changer? They are big. I had to wrestle him down.” She rubbed her chest. The bear had gotten off a good blow that knocked her off her feet. If she had been a normal changer, it would have cracked her ribs. “Six is the safe bet. Five is a struggle, four and you may get your asses kicked.”

Her captive gave her a knowing smirk. Dean flipped him off as her wolves dragged him away, the jaguar hobbling after them with its still injured paws under watchful eyes. “And check them for silver poisoning! Don’t need them dying in the night. Where are Vikky and Red?” Her hand went to her pants for her phone…and she realized she wasn’t wearing any. Or anything else.

“Damn convenient technology.” She sighed. On the mountain, they had different howls for different messages and their voices carried far. Why hadn’t she thought to teach it to them? She’d gotten too caught up in Viktoriya’s zeal for the modern ways of doing things. A phone could be lost but their voices wouldn’t fail them unless they were dead. Then again, they also didn’t reach quite as far.
